Best Way to Lose Weight ? Don’t Eat ??

I see this a lot and I get asked by other people if it is a good thing to do and that is should a person just NOT eat to lose weight ?? Well, the answer is a resounding NO !! Hell NO !!

This is actually one of the worst things you can do. When you stop eating you throw your metabolism off kilter. Things like your Insulin levels can get out of whack and in the long run you can end up gaining much more weight and fat than before.

However, do not get me wrong. There are seasoned health enthusiast who do fast on a regular basis. Many of these people follow a strict and disciplined fasting regimen. They do it in a way that cleanses out their body and in the long run they can  benefit from this kind of fasting. Don’t confuse this with someone who recklessly starves themselves on and off in no well thought out plan. This is a recipe for disaster.

The best way to lose weight is to eat an abundance of good foods  like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and keep the carbs down to a minimum.

This stuff is not rocket science. Just listen to your body and incorporate a wide range of good , nutritional food to your diet.

Also along with this, make sure you develop a long term exercise regimen that you can do week in and week out for years. I know we keep repeating this,  but  it is just very important and can mean the difference between a healthy and fulfilling Life and one that is  miserable .

If you can only walk twice a week then just stick with that for awhile. However, you may need to appropriately adjust what you eat compared to someone who runs four times a week.   Obviously they will be able to consume more calories because they are burning more off !! :)

Hey guys. I hope you are  having a good one today !! I want to keep it short today and talk about eating and  some good tips you can implement as part of your Lifestyle.

First of all , sometimes adding a fourth meal can be beneficial in your desire to be fit. This increases your body’s metabolic rate and keeps the calories burning all through the day. One might eat breakfast around 8 am, lunch at Noon, and then a in between a  3rd meal around 3 pm, and finally Dinner at 7 PM. At night time always make sure to go to bed just a little hungry. DO NOT stuff your face right before you go to sleep. This is a no-no and will cause you to pack on the fat. Believe me.

It seems to me that the ones who are the most successful at keeping fit and slim are the ones who keep their diets simple and easy to implement. Strangely enough this usually means keeping a small arrangement  of foods to use for your meals. And then mixing and matching in between that small arrangement of foods. Here is a short list to make it easier for you to stay on a healthy eating diet.

Proteins:
Egg whites with one whole egg for flavor
Grilled Chicken
Organic beef that is grass fed and NOT corn fed
Pork

Legumes:
Lentils
Black beans
Pinto beans

Vegetables:
Spinach
Asparagus
Peas
Mixed vegetables

Now this is a pretty simple group to chose from. Like I said you can mix it up a little, but this will be the foundation of what you eat. Also, you need to throw in one day a week where you eat anything your heart desires. On this day if you want a hot fudge sunday then go eat a hot fudge sunday. If you want to go to a movie and eat Baby Ruths and butter popcorn then eat it.

Just be sure not to overdue it. It is all about keeping a balance in Life. And bottom line is that  enjoying Life while keeping a healthy Mind and Body should be your long term goal . End of story !! :)

Now Iam going off to eat a caramel apple right after I finish my 4 mile run !! ;)

Well, in the last week my family and I have been transitioning in our new home that we just finished moving into. It has been a long week and we just got back internet service two days ago. Its great to be back in the swing of things.

My workout schedule this week is almost nil because of this move. But I did manage to get a 40 minute run earlier in the week. The place in LA that we moved to  is really a nice change from the California desert we have been living in. We will be back in a few months as this is a temporary move . But the Los Angeles weather here is beautiful and it makes it so convenient to go outside and not to have withstand 115 degree weather like we have been used to !! :) Next week I will officially be back to running and working out with my regular schedule.

Remember, staying fit and healthy is a long term process that you need to think about the rest of your Life. It is not always easy to stay in shape and you need to develop your own personal system of exercising and eating that will fit into your Life and enable you to achieve your health goals in an efficient manner.

Dont get too sidetracked by trying this diet here and that diet . There is nothing wrong with jumpstarting you health and fitness goals by trying a reputable diet. But just remember to make a lifestyle change you need to change your regular eating and exercise habits from day to day.

Do You Need Surgery for Effective Weight Loss ? ?

I know in the last decade many people have opted to have surgery to lose weight. There are numerous types of procedures including the stapling of the stomach and putting bands around the stomach. The premise behind this is to shrink the circumference of the stomach thus reducing the amount of food a person can take in.

This in turn reduces a person’s craving and hunger for food. And as a result the weight pretty much melts off. Sounds pretty simple, uh ?? Well, think again because the procedure does carry some risk to it including complications during the surgery. There has been fatalities during the surgery and after the surgery. Things like infections can occur which can be life threatening.

There is a long recovery process and further complications can happen down the road which can be debillitating. These can include emotional problems. After the reduction of the stomach, a person can only eat a small portion of food for each meal. And this can really take a long time for that person to get used to it. Just imagine eating with a regular , hearty appetite for so long then all of the sudden you feel full after a couple of bites of food. This can really take a toll on a person’s pyshce.

So before you ever consider getting surgery to lose weight please think about some of these issues thatyou will have to deal with.

I think 99.9% of the obese population in the World do NOT need surgery. I think too many people are looking for quick soluitions to problems. Remember, like anything else in Life staying healthy and slim is hard work and is a long term way of Life.

It takes knowledge and the discipline and wilingess over a Lifetime to stay healthy. Although there are cases where extremely obese and sick people do actually need surgery for weight reduction, most of us just need some perspiration and inspiration !!  :)

The Biggest Loser May not be the Most Effective Weight Loss Solution……

I know the most recent season of The Biggest Loser  has been over with for quite a while. But I saw some re-runs of past seasons for The Biggest Loser, and I have to say that I think this approach for most people is not conducive for losing weight and staying healthy in the Long run.

The premise behind The Biggest Loser is to see who can lose the most weight in a short period of time and do it week after week after week. They do this for a few months to determine the overall Winner. And during this period of time they put 300lb and even 400+ lb people through very, verystrenuous exercises. We are talking about exercises that have literally caused one contestant to have a near heat attack. This 60 something year old man collapsed doing one of these crazy workouts. Luckily, he did recover and was able to live a normal life from last I heard.

Listen guys I have no problems in jump starting your weight loss efforts. One of the Programs we are a part of does this. But have to say  it does not include extremelystrenuous exercising but pretty much  jump starts your weight loss efforts with an  eleven day weight loss eating regimen.

I dont know maybe its me , but getting grossly obese people to workout until they pass out is a bit much for me. And it is not anything I would ever condone.

As I have always said the best way to stay healthy and lose weight is to adopt a long term exercise regimen  and a healthy diet that you cancontinue to do for years and years.That is the route that should be taken and that is what we will always stand by on this Site !!  :)

In the end, just use your common sense and I think  in the long run you’ll come out ahead and have a healthy and fulfilling Life. ;)

Guys, be careful when trying to lose weight fast in this Heat !!

Man, this Summer has felt like a volcano. We live out here in the California desert and we have been consistently above 110 almost everyday . On top of this, the last two days  have been humid. This can be a recipe for disaster if you are not careful !

And I know some of you guys that read my blog live back East. And even though you dont have the temperature we have here in the desert, you have to deal with that miserable humidity. I know New York City has been over 100 degrees on some days with 100% humidity. Like I said earlier these two of conditions can be dangerous for many people.

If you plan to workout and exercise outside please do yourself a favor and drink plenty of water before doing so. I know recent health reports have said you need to drink 8 glasses of water every single day.

I would even take it one step further and try to exercise in an indoor area if at all possible. Whether that be in your home or a gym.At least wait until the Sun starts going down if you have to go outside to exercise.

Let me forwarn you this……..if you do go out and test the heat and try to run or bike you can succumb to heat stroke when you least expect it. As your body starts to dehydrate you might not even recognize this fact until you pass out or faint. And its too late.

So once again just be careful.

Swimming is really a great activity to pursue during the hot Summer months. You body is cooled by the water around it and you are less likely to succumb to dehydration and heat stroke. It is also a great activity in supporting your joints and feet. You tend to save the wear and tear on these joints as compared to other activities like running.

Just use your commson sense during these hot Summer months !! ;)

Is a Gym necessary to Stay in Shape and for Effective Weight Loss ??

In a nutshell, personally I would say ‘ NO’, a gym is not necessary to get in shape and stay mean and lean.

For over 20 years I have NOT been a Member at any gym. And I have done just fine. It takes some creativity some times, but it really is not as hard as it may sound. There is ways you can improvise like doingpush ups, sit ups, chin ups, walking, running, hiking, swimming etc.. that you can do on your own without paying for any gym membership.

If you dont want to go this route there is very reasonably priced home gym equipment you can purchase. I use one called the Total Gym which Chuck Norris has been endorsing for years on television ads  . And it is more than adequate in keeping me in good shape. I think I paid about $175 for it at Walmart a few years ago. And it is worth every penny of that and more. it is based on pulleys and leveraging your own body weight to get a workout with.
Remember, even if something like this is still a little expensive for you , you can go to yard sales and newspaper ads and find home gym equipment pricedridiculously low. They are usually  used but in most cases are essentially as good as new.

But I do understand for some people going to a gym just makes sense. They have no problem affording the price and they find the atmosphere motivating to them plus the state of the art equipment is hard to beat. By all means if this is the case and your opinion then go join a gym. Just makesure to  thoroughly check it out before joining and make sure you dont get into a binding contract with them that puts you in a bad position. You should preferably go with one where it is a month to month membership with the gym.

I think in the long run, whether it be at a Gym Membership or working out in your basement,  the main point is to adopt an exercise regimen that suits your own needs and style.

And one that you can stick with  for many years to come !! ;)

What are your Goals for the 2nd half of this Year ?? You Need to Write Them Down !!

Hey guys well in the last two weeks we have entered the 2nd half of 2010. Wow, this year has already gone by so swiftly.

Its been an eventful one for yours truly. We had the birth of our second child in February. And she just turned 5 months two days ago. She is so beautiful and perfect. Her big sister Mackenzie is 19 months old now and she just loves her new baby sister so much. It is really amazing.

So what do you guys plan to do the next 6 months ?? Well, the best thing I can suggest for you to do is write down a schedule along with ALL your goals that you want to accomplish. When you do this you need to be very specific and detailed. If its 30 pounds you want to lose in the next 6 months then write it down with pen and paper. If you want to form an exercise regimen that includes 10 miles of running a week and 1 mile of swimming per week then guess what ??  Write it down !!!

By writing it down you are re-enforcing these goals and desires and thus  making it more realistic that you will indeed accomplish them.

Some people have a lot of success with Journals and I encourage  people to do this. I realize some may not have a whole lot of time but you can jot down your exercise and eating habits in just 5 minutes or less everyday.

Part of getting healthy and losing weight is implementing a certain amount of discipline. And the fact is many people just do not have it. Keeping tabulations of your health and fitness goals and everyday tasks does require this discipline. If you can develop it effectively, you are well ahead of most people and well on your way to getting in shape and losing weight and staying healthy.       Thats the bottom line !!!

Back after a couple weeks and Hope Everyone had a Great 4th of July !! Now its back to Effective Weight Loss :)

I didnt really want to take off two weeks from this Blog but the inlaws were in town and I had no choice !! :)

Actually part of this time I was sick from a cold that my 19 month old daughter gave me. And along with her my mother in law, wife, and nieces got it too. I still have a little cough but the main part of the cold is gone.

I worked out yesterday with the Total Gym and it was the first time in over 3 weeks since doing it. Needless to say I am really, really sore today all over my body. But it is a good feeling,  and I plan on getting back to it on  a regular routine including at least two runs a week along with walking with my daughters if weather permits.

Today, I just want to briefly discuss a subject that comes up a lot. And this past week presents a prime example of what I want to touch upon.  So what do people do when Holidays come around, families get together, and vacations come around ?? Well, let me get one thing straight. Yes, it is alright to have a little fun on vacation or during the Holidays. If you are trying to lose weight and get healthy just do things in moderation and keep a balance. So if you are on vacation in the Bahamas feel free to have a Corona or two by the  Ocean. But remember if you drink a couple of these every day then you might bypass that plate of cornbread later that night at dinner.  Or if you want to eat a big piece of Pecan Pie after a big turkey meal on Thanksgiving then the following day eat a salad for lunch or run an extra mile in your exercise.

Remember folks you need to enjoy Life. Splurging here and there can make things fun and enjoyable. Just realize you need to balance things out and do it in moderation !!

When Running May Not be an Option to Lose Weight or Stay Healthy ??

Hey guys many of you know that I have been a Runner for a large part of my Life. Well, actually since I was old enough to barely tie my shoes. My next door neighbor and my Dad got me into Running which gradually evolved in Road Racing and in particular 10Ks. For those of you who may not know 10Ks are 6.2 miles long. And I have been competing in them for over 3 decades now !!

I have always enjoyed the freedom and flexibility of just slipping on my running shoes and cranking out a 5 miler around my neighborhood. The thrill of  getting a great sweat and a good cardivascular workout has never left me as each week I look forward to getting out and hitting the pavement.

Ah, the pavement. Here in lies the problem with running. As much as there is positive effects running long distances have there are some drawbacks particular if you run on pavement. I  have been running on roads for many years now, and it can cause many joint problems that affect your knees, ankles, legs, achilles tendon, feet, back and more. I have been fairly lucky to have an occassional achilles tendon flair up. But the past few years it has stabilized. Others around me including that neighbor who got me starting in running, my dad, my father in law and other professional road racers have not been so fortunate.

The fact of the matter is if you constantly run on pavement over a period of years you will see some detreriation in your joints , back, or feet. The pounding with each step on asphalt will evetually wreak havoc on your body parts.

Thats why I am really concentrating on running on dirt paths, tracks and doing other cardivascular exercises like Swimming, hiking, and Biking.

The next half of 2010 I plan to really take this to a new level and start weening myself off running on pavement. Fortunately, I have escaped many injuries because my natural running style does not involve a high up and down movement of my trunk with each step that pounds on the pavement. Thus I do not have a lot of force coming down hard on the roads with each stride !!

IF some of you do wish to  continue making road running your major source of exercise I highly encourage to adopt a style where you will NOT pound your legs hard on the pavement.

Picture how a chicken runs and try to emulate that !!  Sounds silly but honestly that mental image should give you an idea what I mean !! ;)

The 5 Basic Reasons Why People Cant Lose Weight…..

1. Lack of sleep
2. Chronic stress
3 .Eating of Processed foods
4. Consumption of copious amounts of sugar.
5. Lack of Exercise Regimen

That is it pretty much in a nutshell , folks !! It is simple but unfortunately the road to get there can be difficult.
